Home Environment

We prioritize how your dog views their home by training in neutral environments first. Your dog has had x amount of time to establish a pattern of behavior with you and your home. By sending your dog to us, we teach them the wanted behaviors in our home and stop the unwanted behaviors in a neutral environment that they haven't had time to form those bad habits. So when they come home again for the first time, we can transfer the new behaviors to you.

Owner Education

Multiple Training appointments ensure you are confident to take over the training. This is the most important part of our job. It doesn't matter what we can do with your dog if your dog doesn't respect you enough to do it too. Every appointment we do is aimed to teach you, so you should never feel like you have to "call in the big guns". You will become an expert on your dog, and will look for ways to continue challenging and improving your relationship with them!

Tools & Philosophy

At Hoku K9 Training, we use training tools as a means of communication, not punishment. We primarily utilize prong collars because they distribute pressure evenly around the dog’s neck, unlike traditional flat collars that concentrate pressure on the throat when a dog pulls. Through a pressure-on, pressure-off system, dogs learn how to turn off light leash pressure by making the correct choice, creating clear communication and reliable obedience.

For advanced off-leash training, we use modern e-collars to reinforce known behaviors and maintain communication at a distance. Stimulation levels are individually adjusted to the lowest level the dog can recognize and respond to, allowing us to gain focus without causing unnecessary discomfort. In cases involving serious behaviors such as aggression or reactivity, higher correction levels may be used when appropriate to clearly interrupt the unwanted behavior. We then immediately guide the dog toward the desired behavior and heavily reward correct decisions, helping create lasting behavioral change through clarity, accountability, and positive reinforcement.

Aloha,

I am Laycee. I started Hoku K9 Training because I wanted to help people who were struggling with their dogs.

While receiving my Bachelors in Biology at Brigham Young University Hawaii, I got a dog and really started my journey into the world of dog training. My dog struggled with aggression, resource guarding, and extreme leash reactivity. I found a lot of training methods that didn't work before I found the methods that we implement at Hoku K9 Training. I then went to California to continue my education in dog training, and have utilized that training to help hundreds of dogs and owners, and currently train dogs in both Utah and Hawaii. I train dogs because I love people. This may sound strange, but I train dogs because I know there are a lot of people out there who need help with their dogs but don't know where to find it. So I want to share with the world how to create a better life with your dog.

Lokahi Paikuli-Stride

Lokahi is our lead trainer.

He grew up always having a pack of dogs on a farm in Hawaiʻi and has had a strong bond with every personal dog he's had throughout his life. He loves all animals, and especially loves to see our clients dogs change into the lifelong companion they should be.

Lokahi has a special interest in helping every dog he comes in contact with, which is why he specializes in dog aggression, and spent several months on the East Coast rehabbing aggressive dogs.

When he is not training dogs, Lokahi enjoys playing the guitar, going to the beach with his dogs, snowboarding, and being with his family.
